George Orwell (1903-1950), real name Eric Arthur Blair, was one of the greatest authors of the twentieth century. A journalist, social commentator, prolific essayist and novelist, known for his satirical wit and socio-political focus, he is most famous for his political allegory Animal Farm and his dystopian masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four. His writing is read and studied around the world, and has inspired plays, films and generations of readers. He died in London in 1950.
