Henry James (1843 – 1916) was born in America, schooled throughout Europe and settled for much of his adult life in London and Sussex, England. He withdrew from Harvard Law School to pursue his writing career, and to this day remains one of the foremost literary figures of his generation: influential as a novelist, playwright, essayist and critic.
