A stirring, impactful novel about motherhood, finding meaning for yourself and fighting for the people that you love

It is Baby’s birthday, but Grace has not seen her first born in twenty-six years. Now a wife, mother to twin daughters and the owner of a successful medical clinic, Grace has carefully constructed a new life. And now, the secret she’s kept for decades is about to resurface – and it could destroy everything.

Grace was only fifteen when she got pregnant and, under pressure from her parents, gave Baby away. Unable to forgive their decision, she cut them off completely. Now, when Grace’s estranged mother walks back into her life unannounced, the fragile existence she spent years building begins to unravel.

Grace is a story about motherhood, finding meaning for yourself and fighting for the people that you love.

“Moving [and] absorbing”
stylist

The Middle Daughter is an unflinching portrait of a family’s grief and one daughter’s climb out of despair. An absorbing, memorable read”
Ayobami Adebayo

The Middle Daughter is an emotionally charged exploration of the ways in which a woman may fall victim to conventions designed to ensnare her. Chika Unigwe is a writer of great conviction and superior insight”
Aminatta Forna

“From the very first chapter of The Middle Daughter, you know you’re in the hands of a skilful writer. In Nani, Unigwe has created a character that is both deeply loveable and deeply flawed. You’ll root for Nani and you’ll be frustrated by her. This is a book you’ll want to read and discuss with someone. I highly recommend”
